  • Basic set of gouaches. Split primary (warm and cool of each primary), white, black and a gray. Earth tones like yellow ochre and burnt sienna are also good.
  • Mixing tray
  • Synthetic watercolor brushes, variety pack of flats and roundsmixing tray with space to actually mix colorpencil, black pen, small round brushes for drawing
  • pad of cold press watercolor paper  8×10 to 11×14
  • water cup
  • water
  • paper towels

If you don’t have time or want to spend the money on new stuff then you can use watercolor with a tube of white gouache and the above accompanying materials.

  • or acrylic paints and a pad of watercolor paper
  • same range of colors, pens pencils, small round brush mixing trays etc. as we will be working smaller, big bristle brushes don’t work.
  • inexpensive variety of small to medium synthetic acrylic or watercolor brushes
  • or oil if that’s what you have
  • gessoed watercolor paper or gessoed cardboard or matte board
  • cheap canvas doesn’t work for small studies
  • turp same idea with the pencils pens and brushes as above.
